Bryn Mawr’s own and a product of the successful FC Delco program, Jimmy McLaughlin was The Philadelphia Union’s second homegrown signing. Jimmy is playing in his second season with USL’s FC Cincinnati. The Union Deux caught up with Jimmy to get his thoughts on his days with the Union.
What was your first thought when you were told you were being offered a professional contract by the Union?
My first thought when I was offered a contract from the union that it was a dream come true. Ever since the union was founded it was my dream to play for the team. It was a very tough decision leaving Colgate University but something I could not pass up.
Do you still have friends on the team?
I do still have friends on the team. I am good friends with a bunch of guys on the team still. I am closest with Richie Marquez and Johnny McCarthy.
What’s your fondest memory of your time in Philadelphia?
Best memory of Philly was being able to share some amazing experiences at PPL Park now Talen Energy stadium with my friends and family.
Who was the biggest prankster on the Union?
Biggest prankster… Maurice Edu
How often do you make it back to Philly?
I go back to Philly for the off-season which is nice to be back home for a few months and do some good training with local players at YSC Sports. YSC is an amazing facility with great coaches and people, it has been very influential in my off-season development each year.
How would you describe your time at the Union Academy?
I was on the first ever union academy team and had the honor of captaining the squad in our first ever tournament. It was an awesome experience. It was all so new when I was involved we only met once a month to train at the time. It has come so far since I have been in the academy. The work that Richie Graham is doing with the academy and the YSC school is absolutely incredible. It is a first-class training and learning environment for these young boys. In my opinion it is one of the best youth set ups in the country.
Is there anything you would like to say to the Union fans?
I just want to thank the Union fans for all their support of the team. The Sons of Ben is one of the best supporters groups in the country and reminds me a lot of our supporter groups here in Cincinnati.
What made you decide to write that letter to the FC Cincinnati fans?
We have very high expectations for ourselves and have had some ups and downs so far this year and I just wanted to thank our fans for sticking with us no matter what. I also wanted to assure them things are going well and we are doing the right things to achieve our goals.
